Things we get asked a lot
Magna Clip™ is a wheelie-bin lid retention concept being developed by LESS. It is designed to help keep bin lids securely closed during everyday use, helping reduce problems caused by wind, weather and unwanted animal access.
The design aims to provide a simple solution without changing the way households normally use their bins.
Magna Clip™ uses a simple magnetic retention system designed to help hold the bin lid closed during normal use.
When the bin is inverted during standard collection, the system is designed to release so the lid can open and the bin can empty normally.
There are no switches, batteries or complicated mechanisms for the household to operate.
Magna Clip™ began with a simple everyday problem: wheelie-bin lids can open unexpectedly due to wind, weather or animals, potentially allowing rubbish to escape into streets and the surrounding environment.
LESS is exploring whether a simple intervention at the bin can help keep waste contained closer to its source.
The Community Pilot is a proposed small-scale real-world trial designed to help LESS understand how Magna Clip™ performs during normal household bin use and collection.
The pilot will help gather practical feedback, identify potential improvements and explore whether the concept could help reduce escaped litter and other weather-related bin problems.
Residents interested in participating will be able to register their interest through the Community Pilot section of this website.
Selected participants will receive information about the trial, what participation involves and how to provide feedback.
Participation in the pilot will be voluntary.
Magna Clip™ is currently in development and is being prepared for prototype testing and community evaluation.
The purpose of this stage is to test, learn and improve the design before considering wider availability.
